Dr Nick Selby appointed as Editor of Comparative American Studies journal from 2008
Maney Publishing has announced the appointment of Dr Nick Selby as the new Editor of Comparative American Studies in 2008. Dr Selby will take over from issue 3 this year.
Senior Lecturer in the School of American Studies, University of East Anglia, Nick Selby has a wide range of research interests, with poetry of the twentieth century at the core of his research. As well as focusing on American experimental poetry, avant-gardism and the issue of what constitutes an American poetics, his current interests also include transatlantic connections in British experimental poetry, and theories of the ethics and politics of close-reading.
Nick Selby is looking forward to his new role: âComparative American Studies is now strongly established as a journal dedicated to challenging and developing the field of American studies. I'm absolutely delighted to be taking over as editor of the journal and aim to keep its investigation of America and its cultures, and its contribution to American studies, fresh, exciting and intellectually stimulating.â
Contributions and ideas for papers or themed issues are welcomed and should be sent to: Dr Nick Selby, School of American Studies, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of East Anglia, Norwich NR4 7TJ, UK, or email n.selby@uea.ac.uk, and in North and South America and the rest of world to: Jane Desmond, The International Forum for US Studies (IFUSS), 226 International Center, The University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA 52242, USA, or email: jane-desmond@uiowa.edu. For more information on Notes for Contributors please visit www.maney.co.uk/journals/notes/cas
Nick Selby succeeds Dick Ellis, Head of the Department of American and Canadian Studies, University of Birmingham, who has edited the journal since 2003.
A new Associate Editor will also be announced shortly, as Paul Giles retires after publication of the second issue. Jane Desmond continues as North American Editor. Both Dick Ellis and Paul Giles will remain on the journalâs Editorial Board, where their valued contributions and editorial experience will continue to benefit the journal.
Comparative American Studies is an international journal which repositions discussions about American culture within an international, comparative framework by extending scholarly debate about American studies beyond the geographical boundaries of the United States. In this time of increasing globalization there is a growing need for American studies to be re-articulated in a comparative manner: first and foremost taking account of interactions between the USA and other parts of the world, whilst also fully attending to multi-ethnic comparisons within the USA.
The main disciplines covered in the journal are literature, film, popular culture, photography and the visual arts. Attention is also given to history, the social sciences and politics, particularly insofar as these fields impact on cultural texts.

Call for Contributions: RIAS Vol. 2, No. 2 (2007)
March 15, 2007.
Special Issue RIAS on âThe Cultural Significance of Modernity in the Americasâ
The third issue of RIAS will focus on the cultural significance of modernity in the context of the Americas, and its interpellation in the cultures and peoples of both Old and New Worlds. If the 15th century clash that was the cultural encounter of Discovery describes the origins of modernity, then the birth of modernity and its aftermath represent a potentially fruitful avenue for comparative cultural investigation. The study of culture in traditional academic contexts has historically been undertaken within the prescribed parameters of the nation-state and its official language, as well as within neatly demarcated chronological divides. With the advent of the new intellectual paradigm of the Americas, however, these seemingly stable categories and divisions have increasingly come into question, especially when considered in relation to the actual historical record, in which the many encounters and engagements of disparate peoples of the Americas across nations, languages, cultures and centuries often transcend the conventional academic boundaries that would seek to contain them. Considering the meaning of modernity in the Americas from this perspective opens up many possibilities for cross-cultural, multilingual, and transnational dialogue not realizable in more traditional contexts, highlighting the interactions not only of diverse peoples of the New World, but also their encounters with those of the Old.
We are particularly interested in essays and short position papers that explore historical points of contact or convergence between two or more peoples of the Americas or between peoples of both the New and the Old Worlds, essays that examine the academic significance of considering the interrelationships between historical periods, or essays that consider the conflict between the Americas as a new intellectual paradigm and traditional academic contexts.
We encourage online submissions via the RIAS electronic submission platform. To contribute, please register/log in with the RIAS website and then follow the instructions on the site by clicking on the following links in the menu: submitting texts->submit a text. Or for questions, suggestions for topics, or paper proposals, and the like, you may also contact the RIAS guest editor Cyraina Johnson-Roullier at johnson.64@nd.edu.
